“Calling all. This is our last cry before our eternal silence” explores the relationship between man and nature. The video is shrouded in darkness except for lights twinkling in the distance. The subject being filmed is a tree blocking the lights from a building in the night. As the wind blows, the movement of the leaves shield and reveal the light source causing them to ‘flicker’. With this flickering of the lights, I translate them using Morse Code.
The process of decoding and making sense of the dots and dashes derived from one of the light sources filmed, is similar to how man tries to makes sense of nature and our landscape. The title of the work “Calling all. This is our last cry before our eternal silence.” was the final message being transmitted by the French Navy as they ceased the use of Morse code on January 31st 1997, resonating with the fall and silence of nature in our urban landscape.
