Under the Arched Sky
Richard Koh Fine Art (RKFA), Singapore
22 November - 07 December 2019
Under the Arched Sky comprises an installation that stretches over like a bridge or an arch. Interested in architectural arches and how the keystone at the apex bears the weight and holds the entire structure together, I felt the position of the keystone is a parallel to the position of women-being an integral part, bearing weight and holding everything in place.
The wall bound pieces in the exhibition are named after asteroids as well as goddesses. The metal facets indicate stars and the constellations are hidden in the abstraction. These works function like ‘star map’, freezing the position where each asteroid is located alongside the different constellations.
Also for this series I was interested in liminal goddesses, who are able to cross the boundary of life and death and only a select few are able to do so freely and at will. The nature of being able to cross boundaries of ‘in between places’, as well as inhabiting dual or multiple roles all at once is similar to a woman’s role in today’s society. She is able to abide in many domains, straddling conventional boundaries and just as these celestial bodies are being charted through the heavens, we women are constantly redefining, rerouting, re-establishing our own trajectories and narratives in society.
Special thanks to the Richard Koh Fine Art Team for your help and support! Thank you to these lovely people, without them this show would not have been possible. Christiaan Ramesh Haridas, Grishma Gandhi, Tunli Pang, Euginia Tan, Samantha Yap, Liza Markus, Jay Ho, Tan Wen Ying and Leong Jia Hui!
